On Day 1 of the third Test, which is now taking place at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Australia’s Matt Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon each shared three wickets as the visitors bamboozled India. Rohit Sharma (12) and Shubman Gill (21) accumulated 27 runs for the first wicket after deciding to play before being quickly removed by Kuhnemann. Lyon’s delivery, which nipped back in sharply after hitting the ground, utterly caught Cheteshwar Pujara off guard, leading to his dismissal for a cheap price. Up the order, Ravindra (4) Jadeja was moved, but he too lost his wicket.
After Shreyas Iyer mistimed his cut, he whacked one back onto his stumps, giving Kuhnemann his third catch of the innings.
After a 25-run partnership, Virat Kohli (22) and KS Bharat (17) steadied India, but Todd Murphy’s dismissal of the former put the hosts in danger.
Then, in the last over before lunch, Lyon struck again when Steve Smith’s valiant review brought about Bharat’s defeat.
While the Australian bowlers had a memorable session, the pitch was criticised by fans and industry insiders on social media.
This is how Twitter responded:
Wasim Jaffer, a former India hitter, posted on Twitter, “Looking at the pitch, I presume Siraj and Umesh are also rested for this test.” Shami was also rested, according to Jaffer.
Axar Patel (batting six) and Ravichandran Ashwin (batting one) were at the wicket as India was reduced to 84 for seven at the break.
