Australian T20 captain Marsh set for BBL return after losing Test spot

Marsh

Mitchell Marsh, who was dropped for the final Test against India, is in line to play his first BBL match in three years after he was included in the Perth Scorchers squad to face the Melbourne Renegades at Optus Stadium on Tuesday.

Fast bowler Jhye Richardson, who was part of the Test squad for the final two matches of the Border-Gavaskar series, is also set to return to the BBL. Head told Fox Cricket at the SCG on Sunday, “I’m shattered and I don’t know what I’m going to do in the next couple of days, but we have 10-12 days off before we go to Sri Lanka and I’m going to make the most of it.”

Mitchell Marsh returned to Perth on Monday after Australia’s series-clinching win at the SCG, where he gave up his place in the squad to Beau Webster.

If Mitchell Marsh is not selected in the squad for the Sri Lanka tour, he could be available with the Scorchers long after the end of the BBL, which will be announced later this week.

His last BBL match was in January 2022, after which he missed the next season, scoring a century at Headingley. He remained in the team till a few days ago and had to pay the price for his poor performance with the bat.

Steven Smith (Sydney Sixers), Sam Constas (Sydney Thunder), Marnus Labuschagne (Brisbane Heat), Usman Khawaja (Brisbane Heat), Alex Carey (Adelaide Strikers), Nathan Lyon (Melbourne Renegades) and Sean Abbott (Sydney Sixers) are the other Test team players who can play for their BBL teams.

Mitchell Marsh, who was dropped for the series-deciding fifth Test against India, last played for the Scorchers in the BBL final win over Sydney Sixers.

Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades Match:

The all-rounder is Perth Scorchers’ second-highest run-scorer of all time with 1904 runs behind captain Ashton Turner’s 2178 runs and provides strength to their top order alongside Finn Allen and Cooper Connolly.

The Scorchers were also strengthened by the return of pacer Jhye Richardson, who missed three of the last four matches after being called up to the Australian squad for the final two Border-Gavaskar Trophy Tests against India.

After making five single-figure scores in his last five Test innings against India, Marsh was dropped in favour of SCG debutant Beau Webster. And Marsh will be able to reclaim his best form with the Scorchers, as he prepares himself for the Sri Lanka tour starting later this month and the 50-over Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan next month.
