Former cricketer David Warner praised Sam Constas after his impressive debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The 19-year-old played a role in setting the tempo of the match as he did not hesitate to challenge pacer Jasprit Bumrah and dismissed him for 34 in his first spell itself. And he showed the courage to play reverse scoop and ramp shots against the India international which also helped Usman Khawaja standing at the other end.
David Warner liked Sam Constas’ performance in the game but expects him to be criticised in the future. The left-hander said the youngster performed brilliantly for the XI in the first practice match of the series and also credited him for playing aggressive cricket against a top-notch fast bowler.
Steve Smith reflected on Sam Constas’ on-field antics on Test debut. People will criticise him too. He will play like this. When a bowler like Bumrah is bowling to you, you have to try and execute it somehow. What he did in the XI shows that he has that talent. But it also shows that he is brave.
David Warner said for the senior players:
Warner was not happy with the approach of the senior batsmen in the fourth Test. So he told that the veteran cricketers struggle to play Jasprit Bumrah who has taken a total of nine wickets. But David Warner highlighted that Steve Smith tried to play differently but he expects more contribution from the top order. The New South Wales-born player hopes that other cricketers except Steve Smith and Head will be brave to get the appropriate result.
Sam Constas was brave in the top order but you have players who have played 50 Tests they could also play different shots they could get out of their crease and bat differently. Steve Smith tried to do a million different things. But one doesn’t have to be that brave to come forward and change that momentum.
David Warner pointed out that Travis Head took the game away from them with that brilliant century in Adelaide. That guy doesn’t just have to come and do it. That’s the way Australians play but others can be more adventurous.
