The English team was welcomed at a reception on Sunday by the British High Commission in Bangladesh prior to the limited overs series between England and Bangladesh. The fact that Taskin Ahmed, Adil Rashid, and Jofra Archer were captured in a photo posing in a cycle rickshaw—Taskin driving, Rashid and Archer riding shotgun—shows how cordial the players from the two teams are with one another.
The first ODI in Dhaka would start without much fanfare, with both sides getting right to work. For both sides, a few problematic lines need to be fixed. Due to difficult schedule, the England think tank has been forced to suffer a period where they are unable to choose their finest ODI Eleven. The players that took part in England’s recent Test series in New Zealand, including Joe Root, Ben Duckett, and Harry Brook, all have a good chance of being selected.
Will Jacks, who was in New Zealand, has joined the England limited overs team to replace the injured Tom Abell. With the World Cup approaching, Jacks will be battling for the role of the spinning all-rounder. Yet the current all-rounder, Moeen Ali, did show some form in South Africa during the ODIs. The centre of attention would also be on Mark Wood and Jofra Archer. Two of the fastest bowlers in world cricket haven’t faced up against another team since England and India squared off in a Twenty20 International in Ahmedabad on March 20, 2021.
Yet Wood and Archer would probably need to adjust to Bangladesh’s climate, which is spin-friendly. One of the three spinners for the home squad will be the seasoned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. It would be promising for the squad if Bangladesh’s captain Tamim Iqbal, who has recently dealt with a groyne issue, could play again.
Mahmudullah, Shakib, Tamim, and Mushfiqur Rahim are not getting any younger, thus it would be up to Litton Das, Najmul Shanto, Taskin Ahmed, and Mehidy Hasan to form the next core leadership group. With this series, Chandika Hathurusingha’s second run as Bangladesh’s head coach officially began. And he hopes to start his second term off well. By the way, in a home ODI series last year, England trounced Bangladesh.
When: Bangladesh and England’s first One-Day International is on March 1.
Where: Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka
What to expect: The spinners will be supported by the Dhaka pitch. even when favourable batting circumstances were present in some recent BPL games. The game is scheduled to start around 12 PM local time to avoid damp conditions.
England
It’s probable that England, with pacemen Wood and Archer, will be tempted to use both of them. In the interim, Will Jacks might play his first ODI match. Young leg spinner Rehan Ahmed is another candidate.
The likely starting eleven players are Jos Buttler (c, wk), Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, James Vince, Will Jacks, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, and Mark Wood.
Bangladesh
Tamim will take over as the starting in lieu of Anamul Haque. Three spinners could be chosen by Bangladesh.
Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Towhid Hridoy, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam, Litton Das, Tamim Iqbal (captain), Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), and
“When at his best, Musafizur is among the top bowlers in the world. We won the India series when he first started (a three-match ODI series in 2015). He is now returning to that shape. He bowled quite well in the most recent India series as well. He consistently bowls at crucial times, so we’ll try to use him as a strike bowler “is the Hathurusingha.
“We are mindful of Bangladesh’s strong bowling attack, especially in these conditions. We are also aware of Mustafizur’s excellent level of talent, paciness, and bowling prowess because we have played with him.” in Moeen Ali
