IPL 2024: SWOT Analysis of Gujarat Titans (GT)

SWOT Analysis of Gujarat Titans

Gujarat Titans (GT) will play their first season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) without Hardik Pandya. The 2022 IPL champions sold Pandya to Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the auction in Dubai. Following the move, Gujarat appointed Shubman Gill as their captain for the IPL 2024 season.

Under the young captain, GT will look to continue their aggressive brand of cricket. In the 2024 IPL auction held in Dubai, they spent Rs 30.30 crore to buy eight players, which included big names like Shahrukh Khan and Umesh Yadav. Their most expensive purchase was Australian left-arm fast bowler Spencer Johnson for Rs 10 crore. After the 2024 IPL auction, GT has formed a 25-member squad, following which SWOT analysis becomes necessary.

Here is a SWOT analysis of the Titans.

Strengths

extraordinary international giants

Famous international players Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami make Gujarat a strong team. Over the last two years, all these names have played a vital role in making GT one of the most successful franchises in the cash-rich league. Kane Williamson will also be seen in action in the 2024 season. The return of the Kiwi legend will strengthen the Titans’ batting unit.

Superb match-finishers

GT has included Shahrukh Khan in its team after spending Rs 7.40 crore from its purse in the 2024 auction. The Chennai-born player will be expected to utilize his aggressive batting approach and play the role of match finisher in the team. Along with Shahrukh, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia also have the ability to finish the game brilliantly.

Sensational spin-bowling duo

Gujarat’s spin attack will be led by Rashid Khan and he will be supported by his compatriot Noor Ahmed. While Rashid is known for wreaking havoc on the batsmen with his leg-break bowling, Noor also showed in 2023 that he can trouble the batsmen with his wrist-spin bowling. The Afghan pair will again try to trap the batsmen for GT in 2024.

Weaknesses

Lack of quality all-rounders

After Hardik Pandya’s departure, there are no good all-rounders in the GT team. They have Rashid Khan, Vijay Shankar, Azmatullah Omarzai and Rahul Tewatia, who can serve the team in all departments of the game, but their records show that they are not as effective as Pandya.

GT’s fast bowling unit will be led by Mohammed Shami and he will be supported by his Indian teammates Umesh Yadav and Mohit Sharma. Except Shami, both the fast bowlers are struggling to perform well. Umesh has looked very poor with the ball in the 2023 edition for KKR, while Mohit has played only three matches since the final against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in May 2023. In those three matches, the 35-year-old struggled to take wickets. ,

Opportunities

An incredible opportunity for new members to cement their place on the team

Shahrukh Khan, who failed to deliver amazing performances for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two seasons, will be looking to put up an extraordinary performance in the GT colours. Spencer Johnson, who bagged a lucrative deal of Rs 10 crore from the franchise, will have to justify his huge sum in the tournament. Umesh Yadav failed to shine with the ball in 2023 but he will perform remarkably for the Titans in 2024 and keep his IPL career alive for a few more years.

Threats

First time captain

For the first time in the league, Shubman Gill will be seen as captain. As a batsman, he has done wonders for GT in 2023 which has helped him fill the shoes of Hardik Pandya, who will be seen in the Mumbai Indians jersey. In the leadership role, Gill will have the responsibility of carrying forward Hardik’s excellent work.

With New Zealand captain Kane Williamson in the GT team, the GT team management has trusted Gill to lead the team. Keeping the future of the team in mind, this step can be considered wise but the inexperience of young Gill can go against the team in the match.
