Star English batsman Dan Lawrence has been signed by BBL (Big Bash League) team Melbourne Stars. The 26-year-old was signed as an overseas replacement and will play the remainder of the tournament after the Stars lost the services of Usama Mir and Haris Rauf due to international duty.
Lawrence has four seasons of playing experience in the BBL, where he represented the Brisbane Heat in the 2020 season. He was nominated for the draft in September but was not selected.
Haris Rauf had to leave the Stars camp midway after being called up to play for Pakistan in the upcoming limited overs tour of New Zealand in January 2024. It is noteworthy that the first match of the series against New Zealand is not till January 12. But PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) has extended Zaman Khan’s time to play in BBL till December 28 to better manage the workload of the players. Only No Objection Certificates (NOCs) were granted to those signing Rauf, Mir and Sydney Thunder.
Lawrence’s arrival could be a big boost for the Stars, as the franchise has been quite unlucky in terms of foreign contracts in the tournament. The team selected Harry Brook in the overseas draft, but Brook opted out of the competition to better manage his workload.
Stars expect better performance after new contracts
Melbourne Stars have had a very poor season so far in the current BBL 2023-24. Playing five matches so far in the tournament, Stars have been successful in winning two matches and lost the remaining three matches.
Sitting at fourth place with four points, the Stars will hope that the arrival of Lawrence will give their batting lineup some much-needed boost as they will also hope to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.
For their next game, the Stars will take center stage against the Adelaide Strikers in the 20th game of the competition at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday, December 31. Having won their last two matches, Melbourne Stars will be keen to maintain their winning streak and move on. Mark sheet.
