Pat Cummins was “amazed” by England’s Barmy Army’s gesture for his ailing mother, saying, “Mom loved watching.”

Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, said last week that he will not be travelling to India for the third Test match against the hosts, which will begin on March 1 in Indore. After India won the second Test, Cummins, who had travelled to Sydney, announced that his mother, Maria, had started receiving terminal care. Since then, passionate sentiments for Cummins and his mother have deluged social media. A touching rendition of the West Side Story song “Maria” was played in support of Cummins’ mother Maria in a video that England’s Barmy Army posted on Saturday.

In response to the post uploaded by the Barmy Army, Cummins has now stated: “Thank you, @TheBarmyArmy, this is fantastic. Mom enjoyed it a lot and was really moved.”

India, who has previously won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leads Australia 0-2 in the four-match series.

Vice-captain Steve Smith is poised to take the team’s reins in Cummins’ absence for the third Test.

But, the potential comeback of all-rounder Cameron Green and top bowler Mitchel Starc might help Australia.

With a magnificent 132 in their second innings 483 on Monday, New Zealand’s former captain Kane Williamson brought his team back into the match, leaving England 258 to win.

After starting the day at 48-1, England faltered in the morning, losing four wickets for just 27 runs, before Joe Root brought his team to 168-5 at lunch.

Root and Ben Stokes’ partnership came to an end on run 121 as England’s captain was caught at square leg as they continued to make progress towards their objective.
