Rohit Sharma: Selectors planning ahead after Australia tour

Rohit Sharma

Selectors’ plan after Australia tour:

There is going to be a lot of upheaval in Indian cricket both on and off the field. This is especially true for the Test team. India’s results have not been good since the home series against New Zealand. Along with this, there have been extensive changes in the team, the most recent of which is the ouster of captain Rohit Sharma.

Rohit has been going through a bad form, especially in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Due to this, he was dropped midway through the series and Jasprit Bumrah was given the reins for the fifth and final Test in Sydney. According to the Indian Express report, Rohit Sharma is no longer part of India’s red-ball plans and the selectors have told him this as the team prepares for the new WTC cycle and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

As things stand, it is highly unlikely that Rohit Sharma will be considered if India qualify for the World Test Championship final in June. The decision to not let Rohit play at the Sydney Cricket Ground has been taken by head coach Gautam Gambhir in consultation with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Meanwhile, it is also being reported that the selectors will discuss the way forward with Virat Kohli as the team is set to enter one of the biggest changes.

As far as the 2025 Champions Trophy is concerned, a concrete decision will be taken in the coming days after the team returns to India after the series in Australia. It has emerged that Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be handed the reins if Rohit Sharma is dropped from the ODI squad.
