Shubman Gill, a fine batsman, was left out of the starting lineup for the opening Test of the four-match series against Australia at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria believes that in-form batsman Gill should have opened the game along with skipper Rohit Sharma in the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2023.
In 2023, the 23-year-old was brilliant and scored four centuries across all formats. In the middle order, Gill had to fill in for Shreyas Iyer, who was ruled out of the opening match due to injury. However, the club management selected him only as a backup opener as they did not see him as a middle order batsman. In Test cricket, he registered his maiden century
Kaneria, in a video posted on his YouTube channel, argued that Shubman Gill should have started at the top of the order in place of vice-captain KL Rahul to take full advantage of the young opener’s current form.
“In my opinion, Shubman Gill should have introduced Rohit Sharma first. Even if KL Rahul is your senior player, Gill is in excellent form and deserves to be picked over Rahul according to Danish Kaneria.”
