One of the most well-known figures in Indian women’s cricket, Shafali Verma, briefly lost her cool during the Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 match against Australia on Thursday. Shafali, who was fielding at backward point and had previously scored fifty goals, successfully captured Beth Mooney. While there is no denying the importance of the wicket, Shafali’s celebration was a little over the top. When she said Mooney farewell, the young starter was overheard mumbling a few things.
It should be remembered that Mooney was removed by Shafali Verma at long-on with 34 while Lanning avoided a stumping attempt from late replacement Sneh Rana after making nine.
Shafali had hoped that Mooney’s exclusion would change the outcome of the match in India’s favour since she had recently led her country to victory in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, but it didn’t happen.
Australia continued their onslaught and finally scored 172 runs as a result of some exceptional batsmanship performances and fielding errors by Indian players.
India’s response was only 167 runs, falling 5 runs short. The efforts of Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues were commendable, but other Indian batters were unable to make a meaningful run contribution.
In Newlands on Thursday, India’s thrilling run chase fell tragically short, sending Australia into their sixth straight Women’s T20 World Cup final.
