The Mumbai Indians players’ refusal to accept Hardik Pandya as their captain for the 2024 Indian Premier League has angered former Indian cricket spinner Harbhajan Singh. Hardik replaced Rohit Sharma as captain prior to the start of the new campaign, although the squad lost three games in a row while he was in charge. Following Sunday’s loss to the Rajasthan Royals, Harbhajan was dissatisfied to see Hardik by himself in the dugout.
Something feels off. Simply put, it’s unfair to him. The players ought to recognise him as the captain. After the game, Harbhajan stated on Star Sports, “The team should stick together because the decision has been made.”
Former MI player Ambati Rayudu, who was on the discussion panel, questioned if the members of the team Under Hardik’s direction, they are “confused” and “unwilling to work independently”. It seems that “big names in the dressing room” are impeding Hardik’s ability to function autonomously as captain, Harbhajan retorted.

Hardik Pandya wouldn’t have been taken into consideration if the BCCI had selected Rohit Sharma to captain the Mumbai Indians for the T20 World Cup last year, claims former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu. Following the announcement by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah at an event in Ahmedabad that Rohit would captain the T20 World Cup Two months later, in February, he was announced as the MI captain.
“The team would not have chosen Hardik as captain if BCCI had named Rohit as the skipper for the T20 World Cup in October. It goes beyond what the franchise can say. Consequently, he stated in the “Star Sports Press Room” that “time is really the key factor.”
Pandya is currently dealing with crowd wrath in the ongoing IPL, having faced criticism in the first three matches, including the encounter at MI’s home stadium, Wankhede Stadium.
“Why the captain of our franchise isn’t celebrated as India’s hero, our nation’s leader, remains a perplexing mystery. ‘What has he done wrong?’ people ask. Fans of the franchise might think. But what choices does he have? Achievement is the only element that counts. There wouldn’t be any disturbance if they had won those two games,” he explained.
