Teammate Virat Kohli erupted in fits of laughter as India off-spinner R Ashwin gave Steve Smith a terrifying scare during the opening session of Day 3 of the second Test in New Delhi.
This came after Smith was reminded of the value of remaining in the crease by Ashwin, who had paused mid-delivery during the 15th over of Australia’s innings.
Smith had to sprint back into the crease because Ashwin, a quick thinker on the field, withdrew just as he was about to throw the ball.
The Indian fielders and the Australian hitter both found the humour in the situation and laughed together.
In the morning session, Travis Head and Steve Smith were swiftly dismissed by Ashwin. Head left the game after scoring 43, but Smith only managed nine before losing to Ashwin again.
Eight Australian batters failed to reach double digits, with the exception of overnight pair Travis Head (45) and Marnus Labschagne (35), who briefly counterattacked last night with some measure of success. Ashwin (3/59) played the ideal supporting role.
But when Head received an off-break from Ashwin and Kona Bharat picked up the edge behind the stumps, everything changed during the morning session.
