On becoming captain in place of Meg Lanning
It’s a huge shoe to feel. Obviously, we know how successful Meg was as a player and captain of the Australian team. It’s no secret to me that I have some big losses to recover from. From my perspective, this is a great opportunity to see how I will lead the team into the next generation and the next version of the legacy they want to build. It’s really exciting to take on the role full-time. I have been filling up for the last twelve months.
On his philosophy around captaincy
I have no ego of being the captain. This is not a dictatorship. I’m not here to tell anyone how to play. It’s about encouraging the next generation of leaders within our group and we have some amazing senior players who are captaining the domestic teams. We have the next generation of superstars coming up who are bridging that gap and making sure they can lead themselves and run the game the way they want to play. I am encouraging everyone to raise their voice. This is really important to make this team successful for the next 10-15 years.
On learning from WPL
WPL opened my eyes to what it is like to be an Indian cricketer. We have traditionally come here and played as an Australian team against India. With the WPL, I have gained a new appreciation for the boys and girls playing cricket in India. It doesn’t give us authority over what circumstances we should expect, rather we simply adapt. Knowing all the girls is something we don’t get internationally. But sitting in the same room with someone like Deepti Sharma and seeing how she works was an eye-opening experience.
On cultural differences between India and Australia
In Australia, we love sport. We are not openly fanatic about any one sport. We just love our athletes. Here, some cricketers are celebrities and Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana are on the billboards. This is a big deal here. For me, it was an eye-opener to see what they have to deal with day in and day out and especially how much the fans want you to win.
Husband on Starc’s record IPL bid!
At the time of the bid, I was preparing for the test match in the gym. Initially it was a matter of shock and surprise that such a speech could even happen. This is a huge amount of money. From his (Mitchell Starc’s) point of view it is an opportunity to come back and experience the IPL. He hasn’t been here for eight years so it’s an exciting opportunity for him to experience a new team and a new franchise and play an important role for him.
